Jane Addams Place Shelter

Come out for a Half-Day Rainy Day Service
Project with Jane Addams Place of Lutheran Settlement House!

What: Welcoming Spring Craft Activities with Homeless Children
Where: Jane Addams Place
Corner of 43rd and Ludlow St (in large former church building)
West Philadelphia, PA 19104
When: Friday March 28th 12pm-3pm

Volunteers will work with 3-10 year olds on age appropriate reading and craft activities. We will then join all the residents for lunch and then help sort books for the library space for the children.

Recently re-opened, Jane Addams Place is a comprehensive emergency shelter for up to twenty-nine mothers with children in Philadelphia. At Jane Addams Place, Child and Family Advocates take a holistic framework in assisting residents by focusing on family systems and employing a trauma informed model so that families can regain and maintain permanent housing and employment.

Broad Street Subway (orange line):
Take the Subway to City Hall and transfer to Market-Frankford Line MFL terminal. Follow directions from Market-Frankford Line.

Market-Frankford Line (blue line):
Get off at the 40th Street stop. Walk 3 blocks west to 43rd and 1 block south to the corner of 43rd and Ludlow. Jane Addams Shelter located in large former church building on corner.

Buses/Trolleys: You can take the 21 Bus to 43rd and walk north to Ludlow. You can also take the 64 from west Philadelphia in the direction of Parkside Ave and get off at either Farragut and Chestnut and walk up and over to 43rd and Ludlow or get off at 46th and Market and walk east and south. You can take the 11,13, 34 or 36 Trolley to 37th and Spruce and walk up to Ludlow and over to 43rd.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
From I-95 North, take I-676 (Vine Street Expressway) toward Central Philadelphia. Exit at 30th Street Station. Continue on Market to 44th Street. Turn right onto 44th and left onto Ludlow. Go one block to corner of 43rd and Ludlow. Jane Addams Shelter is across the street at corner of 43rd and Ludlow.

The BwB Youth Advisory Council members have planned 4 days of service projects that will culminate in an overnight service trip in Philadelphia!

Projects include dismantling and sorting bike parts with Neighborhood Bike Works, a day of activities in the park with the children of Jane Addams Place Shelter, the ever-popular underwear drive to benefit the homeless, and more! Members that attend 3 full days of projects will receive a BwB gift and a 50% refund on the fee for the overnight service trip – so bring your friends and lets have a great week serving our community! Members who participate in all of the activities will earn more than 30 hours of service while making new friends and lasting memories!

The Jewish Relief Agency satisfies the various needs of the needy with the purpose of taking care of each other and doing good in the world. With events such as food distributions, JRA is able to help those less fortunate get through the daily struggle for survival.

Volunteers Will:
Work together to package kosher, non-perishable food in boxes for the needy

SEPTA Directions:

Take the Market-Frankford El (blue line) to the Frankford Terminal (the last stop) and transfer to #20 Bus going in the direction of Franklin Mills Mall. Get off the bus at the intersection of Academy Road and Comly Road. Walk 1 block to Dutton Street and turn left. Walk about a half block down Dutton Street, the warehouse is located on Dutton Street.

Driving Directions:

From Roosevelt Blvd (Rt 1) South:

Take Route 1 North. After you pass Red Lion Road, turn Right at the fourth traffic light onto Comly Road for 1.2 miles. Turn Right on Dutton Road. (Dutton Road is the next right turn after you pass Decatur Road) JRA is on the right.

From 95 N:

Travel north on 95 N. Take the Woodhaven Rd. Exit. Take Route 1 South. Take the 2nd exit onto Roosevelt Blvd (Rt 1 South). Turn left onto Comly Rd. for 1.2 miles. Turn right onto Dutton Road. JRA is on the Right.

What? Package food boxes for people in need!

When? Saturday, March 8th 2008, 8:45am to 12:00pm!


SHARE (Self-Help and Resource Exchange) is a program where people can purchase a package of food for $16 and 2 hours of community service with a retail value of about $35. The food package contains meat, fresh fruits, vegetables, and staples. SHARE buyers purchase the food from growers, brokers, and packaging plants. The food is not donated, government surplus, or salvage.

NOTE: Please dress in LAYERS.

Join BwB for a special ABINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Saturday Service Project. Support the Rubye's Kids music festival!!!

DAY: Saturday, March 8th !
TIME: 8:30am to 1pm!
PLACE: Willow Grove Moose Lodge, 3 Woodlawn Avenue Willow Grove, PA 19090 (Right near Abington High School)

WHAT: Supporting Rubye’s Kids Music Festival. Rubye's Kids provides charitable services which further the social, emotional, and educational welfare of underprivileged children all year long.

Volunteers will do face painting, tattoos, dance with kids from nearby shelters and help with registration and tickets.

From I-76

Take Rte 76 to Exit 344/I-676 East. Take I- 676 East and exit at Broad Street/Rte. 611 (2nd exit). You will be on Vine Street. Follow signs for Vine Street/PA Convention Center to 12th Street (4 traffic lights). Make a right on to 12th Street. The entrances to the Convention Center are located two blocks ahead at the NE and NW corners of 13th and Arch Streets.

From 1-95

Take I-95 North to Exit 22 Central Philadelphia / I- 676. Stay in the left lane of this exit. Follow signs for I-676 West to the 1st exit (Broad Street). This exit brings you up to 15th Street. Get into left lane and follow the sign for 611/Broad Street and make a left turn on to Vine Street. Follow signs for Vine Street/PA Convention. Eliza Shirley is located two blocks north of the convention center.
