Special Olympics!

DAY: Saturday, November 3
TIME: 8 AM - 12 PM &/OR 12 PM - 4 PM

NOTES: Rain or Shine. Food Available for Purchase. Don't forget your signed permission slip!

WHAT: Special Olympics Pennsylvania expects over 1,000 athletes and 400 coaches from 44 counties to participate in the statewide competition. Last year's Fall Festival drew over 2,500 volunteers from the Villanova student body and the surrounding community. This Festival is the largest annual student-run Special Olympics event in the world!

SEPTA:
Via Broad Street Line (Orange) and Market Frankford Line (Blue): Take the Broad Street Line to City Hall and free transfer to the Market Frankford Line (EL). Take the EL to 69th Street and transfer to Trolley 100. Follow the Trolley directions below.

Via Trolley (69th Street): SEPTA's Route 100 trolley travels between Norristown and 69th Street Terminal. Get off the Route 100 trolley at the Villanova Station (STADIUM) on Ithan Ave. Walk up to the corner of Ithan Ave and Lancaster Ave (US Route 30) and cross over Lancaster Ave.

Via Regional Rail: Take the R5 (Paoli Local) from 30th Street, Suburban, or Market East Stations to Villanova Station. Take the pedestrian tunnel under the tracks and walk straight through the walkway under Mendel Hall.

BwB will meet at the Jake Nevin Field House at the corner of Ithan Ave and Lancaster Ave.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
Take I-476 (the Blue Route) to EXIT 13 (US 30 St. David's/Villanova). At the bottom of ramp turn right onto Route 30 East (Lancaster Ave). Proceed EAST onto Lancaster for a 1/2 mile, and at the 4th traffic light you will see Villanova's main parking lot on the right.

John Heinz Wildlife Refuge

We’ve got a great service project planned with John Heinz Wildlife Refuge

PLACE: John Heinz Wildlife Refuge, 8601 Lindbergh Boulevard, Philadelphia, 19153
DAY: Saturday, November 1st
TIME: 10:00am-2:00pm (stay until 2:30 for an optional advocacy project!)

VOLUNTEERS WILL: Clear trails and help to rid the Refuge of Evasive Plants. Come protect this amazing natural resource near the Philadelphia Airport. At our last service project we saw an owl, some deer, and an amazingly fat turtle.

Lunch is Provided!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SEPTA Directions:
Broad Street Line (the Orange Line):
* Take the BSL to the Snyder Avenue stop.
* Take bus #37 towards 89th St. and get off at 84th and Lindbergh Blvd.
* Walk to 8601 Lindbergh Boulevard.

Market Frankford Line (the El):
* Take the El, West, to get off at City Hall.
* Transfer to the Broad Street Line headed south and get off at Snyder.
* Take bus #37 towards 89th St. PNC Bank and get off at 84th Street Lindbergh Boulevard.
* Walk to 8601 Lindbergh Boulevard.

Buses:
The 37, 68, 108 and 305 drop near to John Heinz. You can also walk about 1 mile from the 36 trolley Island Ave/ Lindbergh Stop or the Regional Rail Eastwick stop.
Want to meet and travel together?
Be at Broad and Snyder by 9:00 am to ride the #37 bus with BwB staff! Students will also meet at 69th St Terminal at 9:00 am to ride Bus 108. Please be on time! We are catching a bus and can't wait for latecomers. Don't forget your token or a transfer (which you need to purchase on the El or the BSS before catching the bus.)

Driving Directions
From the North:
* Traveling on I-95 South, take Exit 14 (Bartram Ave.)
* At the 5th light turn right onto 84th Street
* At the second light make a left onto Lindbergh Blvd.

From City Line, 30th Street, University City Area
* Traveling on I-76 E, stay in left lane after passing the 28th Street Exit and follow signs for Route 291 West
* At the light, turn right onto Route 291 West and go over the Platt Bridge
* Stay in the left lane as you come off the bridge-DO NOT go on to I-95 South
* After exiting the bridge bear to the right and onto Island Avenue
* At the first traffic light turn left onto Bartram Avenue
* Go to the first traffic light and turn right onto 84th Street
* Go to the second traffic light and turn left onto Lindbergh Blvd.

Thursday Night Haunted House Service Project!

The night before Halloween come haunt kids in the People’s Emergency Center Shelter and surrounding neighborhood.

Volunteers will...
Run a haunted house! Jobs include dressing up in costumes to scare neighborhood kids, face painting, arts and crafts, & more!

Lupus Loop 2007

DAY: Saturday, October 28th
TIME: 7:30 am to 12:30 pm
PLACE: Fairmount Park Carousel House at Memorial Hall Loop
Belmont Ave and Concourse Drive, Philadelphia PA 19131

WHAT: The mission of the Lupus Foundation of America is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus, support individuals and families affected by the disease, increase awareness of lupus among health professionals and the public, and find the causes and cure.

The Lupus Loop is a part of a nation-wide series of walks/events that raise awareness and funds to fight lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and tissue damage to virtually any organ system in the body. It strikes mostly women of childbearing age, although women of all ages, as well as men and children, develop lupus. Lupus is a life-threatening, life-diminishing disease.

VOLUNTEERS WILL: help set up the event, support registration needs and form cheering squads at the beginning and last mile of the race. Students will also help with children's activities and games.

SEPTA DIRECTIONS:
Market-Frankford Line: Take the Market-Frankford Line to 69th Street. Take the 64 Bus to Parkside Ave and 49th St stop. Walk on Parkside Ave to Belmont Ave. Turn left onto Belmont Ave. Continue north on Belmont Ave into Fairmount Park and to intersection with Concourse Drive. Carousel House is up from that intersection.

Bus: The 65 Bus will bring you to Lower Merion where you can get on the 38 Bus at City Ave. That bus drops off at the intersection of Belmont Ave and Concourse Drive.
Broad Street Line: Take the BSL to the El and follow the directions above.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
I-76 East:

Take I-76 to EXIT 341 Montgomery Drive toward West River Drive
Keep RIGHT at the fork to merge onto Montgomery Drive
Turn LEFT onto Belmont Ave
Turn onto N. Concourse. Carousel House is up from Concourse and Belmont Ave intersection.
I-76 West:
Take I-76 West to EXIT 342-Girard Ave-Philadelphia Zoo
Take slight right to get onto US-13/N. 34th St.
Street turns into Lansdowne. Remain on Lansdowne for half a mile. Lansdowne becomes Concourse Drive. Carousel House is up from Concourse and Belmont Ave intersection.
