Serve-A-Thon with City Year

Serve-A-Thon with City Year!
DAY: Saturday, May 10th, 2008
TIME: 8:30am to 2:00pm

PLACE: Cecil B. Moore Recreation Center, 22nd Street and Lehigh Ave., Philadelphia
Join Building with Books and City Year in our efforts to revitalize Cecil. B. Moore Recreation Center! Help this center become a hub for safe, educational, and fun activities for local children.

Cecil B. Moore Recreation Center was built in 1923 and is located in a neighborhood with a rich cultural history. The playground and activities offered at Cecil B. Moore Recreation Center have a special place in the hearts and childhood memories of many of those who grew here. However, times have changed! In recent years the Recreation Center has faced many problems. In 2004, the city was going to destroy the recreation center because it lacked funding. The facility’s condition was miserable, and when a 10-year-old boy was shot and killed several blocks away, several people in the community decided the time had come to make some changes. They decided it was time to restore the aging center to its former glory. Help the center achieve this goal!

Volunteers Will:
· Paint a fence!
· Paint the Recreation Center!
· Paint games on the Blacktop!
· Help to remove Graffiti!
· Indoor cleaning and beautification!
· Pick-up trash from the surrounding area!
· Playground restoration!
