Millicent Sparks of the Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum in Philadelphia will present a first-person portrayal of Harriet Tubman, the most famous “conductor” on the Underground Railroad who aided enslaved Africans to freedom. Speaking in the southern vernacular identified with American slaves, she blends accounts of events in Tubman’s life with an acute sense of her personal qualities and performs 19th century freedom songs that were sung by Tubman, often as coded messages to facilitate the guiding of her fugitive charges northward. She concludes these performances by responding in character to questions about Tubman and the Underground Railroad.
